At Mooney Wellness, services offered in the scope of Occupational Therapy are CBIT and CBT-I. These services are only offered in states where OT licensure is held - currently Colorado, New Mexico, Florida, and Idaho. If you are not located in these states but are interested in these services and partnering with Mooney Wellness, please reach out and provide information about where you are located. As the practice expands, Mooney Wellness will prioritize credentialing and licensing to offer services where demand is known.
If you are outside the practice location but still desire to connect with Mooney Wellness, please reach out. Mooney Wellness offers consultation and coaching outside the scope of Occupational Therapy. Mooney Wellness is able to provide coaching and consultation to individuals or corporations seeking clarity on concepts of nervous system management, or circadian timing. Additionally, Ben Mooney has level 1 IFS training, and consults as an IFS-informed coach in 1:1 virtual settings.
Additionally, Ben is able to offer personalized space for processing the difficulties of caregiving and coping with TS, Anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and the coexisting conditions that so often accompany these diagnoses. Sometimes people feel like they are alone on this journey, and need someone to listen with empathy. Ben can provide this service as a coach.
Ben graduated from the Pisgah Institute for Coaching in 2023, and also got level 1 IFS training in the same year.
IFS (Internal Family Systems) has been instrumental in my journey of self discovery and growth as a human. IFS theory is based on the concept that we have “parts” that make up who we are as people, much like the characters of movies like Inside Out, Encanto, or even The Breakfast Club. We have parts of us that like to organize, manage, fix, repair, show strength, care for others, hide, sabotage, numb, be seen, etc. As humans, we build relationships with these parts as we grow and mature, and in so many cases we follow the patterns we have created with our parts even when those patterns no longer serve us. Central to IFS is the understanding that we also have a “Self,” or an internal presence that is at the core essence of who we are. As we navigate our life, we build complex relationships internally with our parts and our Self energy. IFS is a beautiful way to understand this intricate relationship, and to see how it shows up in our behaviors. Through this understanding, we get to know our parts, the stories of how our parts became what they are today, and we can form a Self-to-part relationship that creates a profound internal awareness.
In this space, there is no “fixing”, no protocols, no judgment. You can talk and you will feel heard. Moments of clarity come from within.
In my multi-decade career of working with humans in healthcare, I have never had more profound experiences as I have when providing services as an IFS-Informed coach. I have witnessed people transform incredible aspects of how they see the world and live their life, and I can't express in words how gratifying it has been for me to be a part of this process.
I'll share aspects of my story to shine light on this experience. As a child growing up with tics, I created so many aspects of my personality around internal stories I told myself, thus creating strong “parts” of myself that still show up in my adult life. I have a part of me that felt so strong about wanting to belong. I refer to this as my “Craving Acceptance” Part. I was insecure about my tics and this caused me to feel like others might not accept me if I acted differently around them in a way that might cause them to exclude me. As I grew up, I shaped my behavior in ways that accommodate the needs of others in groups, even if my actions were incongruent with my personal desires. Even as an adult, I follow patterns at times that are dictated by my “Craving Acceptance’ part that was created when I was 7 years old. Through my time getting to know this part and building a relationship with my Self energy, I have been able to rescript how this part shows up as an adult.
Another part of me that I share often with my clients is the “Night Owl.” Throughout my childhood, I occupied so much of my time staying busy, that when I finally got into bed and turned off the lights, it was often the first part of my day where I had mental silence and stillness. The Night Owl would take over, trying to analyze patterns from my past and future. What could I have said or done in these scenarios? What should I do if these different things happen? How can I prepare for the unexpected potential occurrences of my life? The Night Owl would silently regurgitate scenarios of past and future outcomes for hours at night, and this became a pattern I used at bedtime well into my 40s. I never questioned this behavior, and it became part of my daily routine. I subconsciously reverted to this behavior on a nightly basis, despite its terrible consequences on my sleep. Through IFS, I discovered the existence of this part of me, and learned its story of how it wanted me to be prepared as a child for circumstances that seemed overwhelming to me at the time. I learned that in my mid-40s, this part is not helping me with what I needed at this time of my life. Finally, I built a relationship with this Night Owl that translates into the life I want to lead now. This work is so powerful, that I no longer fail to see the Night Owl when it shows up, and I have a plan that works when it does visit.
One final story about one of my “parts” that I have built a relationship with, and that shines a light on why I created Mooney Wellness. In grade school, my vocal tics became more notable. I started with throat clearing, then progressed to audible grunts, and at some point, I began pairing together louder audible vocal patterns. These were more prominent when I was in a scenario where I was in front of an audience like in a classroom, especially when I needed to read out loud or speak in front of the class. I became so anxious and fearful about being called upon, and I had paralyzing anticipation of all events of being in front of others. I had a “Chameleon” part that was in constant pursuit of blending in and hiding. I would sit in the back corners of the classroom, give the shortest possible answers when called upon, and dread all times when I had to stand in front of the class or read a passage aloud. This translated into other aspects of life where I needed my voice to be heard. Unfortunately, as I discovered substances, I formed an unhealthy relationship with finding confidence in my voice only through the filter of substance. I avoided scenarios where I could have been more assertive, or where my ideas as a leader would have been beneficial, had I had the confidence to speak up. Through IFS, I developed a Self-to-part relationship with my Chameleon part, and I am on a journey to embrace vulnerability in front of others. I market myself to other healthcare professionals, I speak at parent groups, and find courage to work through long-standing insecurities to advocate for concepts that I believe in personally and professionally.
This is a major part of my inspiration for Mooney Wellness and ultimately why I offer this service.
